We created easy evidence sharing with no central authority and a browser extension to annotate any fact-checked web page for all to see. Call it crowd-checking, if you will. You are fact-checking already. Now you can share your findings to make it easier for everyone. Check-out the Fact Checker browser extension links below for more details and screenshots.

What does the Fact Checker browser extension do?

The CiteEvidence Fact Checker annotates any given web page with evidence that either supports or contradicts any given statement of fact on the page. The web page may contain a news article, a technical manual, a company statement, or any other non-fiction work. Evidence citations are added by anyone through this wiki (or the browser extension), but there are rules which must be followed in order to add new citations to the system. See the all-in-one Help page for a walk-through of the concepts involved before becoming a CiteEvidence contributor. New evidence can be added with just a few clicks using the browser extension.

This is a public Wiki

This wiki is maintained by the Fact Checker community to maintain the data that allows the browser extension to do its job. Like most wikis, the data herein is supplied by anyone who cares to contribute to such an easy-to-use and illuminating research tool.

Getting started

  • There is no need to come to this site directly unless you need to do an edit. Just browse the web as you normally do and with Auto-connect enabled. The Fact Checker will download evidence automatically if the page has any. Statements Under Scrutiny are recognized wherever they may be repeated on the Internet. What that means is that you will get the evidence wherever you need it and the instant you need it.
  • If you would like to contribute, please learn how by first reading the one, albeit long, Help page. Overall, the rules are very basic and easy, but if you have any questions, please use the Help Discussion page to ask questions.
  • Create a new Statement Under Scrutiny (SUS) - Manual method for entering new SUS if you are not using the Fact Checker browser extension.

A major milestone has been reached in that version 1.0 of the Fact Checker is being released any day now. Version 1.0 is the realization of the original vision of the Fact Check with the addition of the sidebar to the browser for viewing SUS results for any given page. Although evidence has always been easily viewable via the evidence popups when hovering the mouse cursor over the SUS indicators within page text, a sidebar that lists all the evidence is needed when the SUS are only contained within non-textual content, such as video, graphics, etc.. The sidebar panel is toggled with CTRL-Space (COMMAND-Space for Mac).

Fact Checker 0.9.0 is out in a couple days with some awesome new features and important performance fixes for Firefox. FC will identify links to articles that have been suss'd-out, such as in web search results, or any other page for that matter. This will be helpful for quickly jumping onto the evidence trail. You can also quickly check for cached versions of any web page at archive.today via the navbar button... just a click away. Watch for the update.
